Muller et al. (2026) investigated the effects of a high-fat/high-sugar diet on hippocampal area CA2 in mice. The authors reported that diet-induced changes included increased excitatory input onto CA2 pyramidal neurons and impaired Oxytocin receptor-mediated endocannabinoid plasticity at inhibitory synapses. Chemogenetic inhibition of CA2 pyramidal neurons altered social novelty discrimination outcomes in diet-exposed mice. In hippocampal slice preparations from diet-exposed animals, Oxytocin application in a concentration-dependent manner restored excitatory response potentiation and endocannabinoid plasticity [1].
